LUCHADORAS

 

In a departure from the usual travel and commercial work, I photographed Durham’s own “Luchadoras,” an all female, non-profit wrestling group. Designed to promote an image of strong, capable women with personalities to match, the Durham Luchadoras follow in the footsteps of the legendary Lucha Libre wrestlers of Mexico. As in Mexico, Durham’s Lucha Libre wrestlers care deeply about their community, and invite local nonprofits to set up tables at their events to do outreach and gain community exposure. The events themselves are benefits for local organizations, such as NC Dream Team, Poder Juvenil, and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
